choosing a photographer for your registry office wedding

I feel uniquely placed here as I had my legal wedding at Guildford registry office so I have seen wedddings at registry offices both as a bride, guest and of course as a wedding photographer. I have shot at Guildford, Basingstoke, Newbury (Shaw House), Henley On Thames, Islington Town Hall and Winchester in the past 12 months alone. I've also been both photographer and witness at two weddings and have also seen weddings with 30+ people so I really have become a sort of expert in these weddings!

I'm a documentary wedding photographer, in short that means that I spend more time capturing what's happening than I do manufacturing moments for images. Registry office weddings tend to be less formal, stiff and more natural and as such my style of photography lends really well to these weddings.

I also offer micro packages so if you're planning the ceremony one day and reception another day- or no reception at all! I can help with packages from an hour.

Winchester Registry Office is set in Castle Hill, a historic building just steps away from the Great Hall and the famous Round Table. It’s a beautiful choice for couples wanting a simple yet memorable ceremony, but there are a few things worth knowing before you book.

Ceremony Rooms
The Registry Office offers several rooms depending on guest numbers. The Basing Room is intimate, ideal for smaller weddings, while the Castle Room suits larger gatherings with its wood-panelled character. Each has a slightly different feel, so it’s worth visiting in advance to see which fits your day best.

Parking & Access
Parking is limited. There are no dedicated spaces at the Registry Office itself, and the surrounding roads are restricted. Your best bet is the Tower Street Car Park (that's where I parked) or the Gladstone Street Car Park, both a short walk away. Allow extra time, especially on weekends when the city is busy. Prepare for a short uphill walk over cobbled streets, which adds charm but isn’t ideal for heels or anyone with limited mobility.

Photo Opportunities
While the ceremony rooms are attractive, most couples step outside for photos. The nearby Great Hall and it's iconic medieval door make a striking backdrop. The cobbled streets and colourful historic houses around Castle Hill give you timeless portraits. For a greener setting, Abbey Gardens and the River Itchen are within a few mins stroll.

Tips for a Smooth Day

  • Visit the area beforehand to plan parking and walking routes.

  • Allow extra time for guests unfamiliar with Winchester’s one-way system.

  • Consider a short portrait session nearby after the ceremony before moving on to your reception and bring a pair of comfy shoes for walking to and from that location!
