Intimate Garden Romance: Sandra & Fred’s DIY Micro-Wedding at Alton House Hotel

When Sandra and Fred approached me about their wedding, they were looking for micro-wedding photography coverage. They booked me for a concise two-and-a-half-hour window, which just goes to show that you don't need all-day coverage to capture the true essence, emotion, and key milestones of your day.

The Power of Micro-Wedding Photography Coverage

Even within a few hours, a professional can capture your arrival, the ceremony, family formals, and gorgeous couple's portraits without anything feeling rushed.

For Sandra and Fred, we structured their two and a half hours perfectly. I arrived just as Sandra pulled up to the venue, captured the beautiful outdoor ceremony, moved into the family formals and couple's portraits, and even squeezed in a "fake" cake cutting before I departed. It gave them a complete, high-quality gallery of their core memories while perfectly fitting the relaxed timeline of their day.

Tailor-Made DIY Details & A Vintage Arrival

Sandra and Fred have been together for a long time, and their day was filled with deeply personal, homemade touches. Sandra arrived in her dad’s green and white vintage car, complete with gorgeous interior cushions hand-embroidered by her mother.

Stepping out of the car, Sandra looked radiant in a sleeveless white satin fitted gown with a ruched bodice and a classic train. She wore matching fresh flowers in her hair to complement her vibrant pink and red rose bouquet, which featured trailing ivy.

Every single bit of the styling and stationery was handmade by Sandra. From the beautifully designed table plan to the adorable wedding favors—packets of wildflower seeds featuring the pun “Fred & Sandra: Meant to BEE. Spread some love with these wildflowers.”

An Outdoor Ceremony in the Gazebo

The summer ceremony took place in Alton House Hotel’s gorgeous outdoor garden space. The ceremony focal point is their stunning, octagonal summer gazebo, featuring a white-painted metal base and a tiled roof, surrounded by a tree-lined lawn.

Because I have photographed at Alton House Hotel before including Sally and Craig’s wedding, where they famously had an owl as a ring bearer! I know exactly how the light falls in the garden and how to navigate the space flawlessly.

Sandra walked down the aisle to a beamed Fred, and the couple exchanged traditional rings and personal readings before signing the register.

A Creative Confetti Toss & Accessible Family Formals

Following the ceremony, we had to adapt the confetti walk slightly. The couple had planned a traditional Celtic handfasting ceremony for later in the afternoon (which took place after my coverage ended). Because the hotel team needed to preserve the main aisle space for the handfasting setup, we moved to a different area of the garden for the confetti.

Instead of a traditional long walk down an aisle, we arranged the guests in a horseshoe shape. This worked beautifully! It created a wonderful, intimate backdrop where every single guest had a front-row view and a great opportunity to throw their confetti. These ended up being some of my absolute favorite shots of the day.

We then utilized the hotel's gorgeous rose arch for family formal photos and a few timeless portraits of Sandra and Fred.

Behind the Lens: Accessibility and guest comfort are always a priority for me. Fred’s elderly mother was comfortably seated on the gazebo, and rather than making her move around the gardens, we brought the family groups to her. By choosing a photographer who is flexible and familiar with the layout of the venue, you can ensure your family photos are completely stress-free for your loved ones.

The "Fake" Cake Cut & A Fun Vintage Finale

Before my two and a half hours drew to a close, we headed inside to the venue's bright, white reception room to do a staged cake cutting. This is a brilliant trick for micro-weddings; it ensures you get that iconic photo of you cutting your wedding cake without having to pause the flow of your evening reception later on!

To finish the coverage on a high note, we headed back out to her dad's vintage car for some fun, traditional-style photos. We staged a hilarious scene of the couple "fixing" the car Sandra at the front ready to crank the engine, and Fred jokingly hitting it with a hammer. It perfectly captured their fun-loving personalities and made for an unforgettable end to their gallery.
