Natural, Relaxed Church Wedding Photography

Christina and Nathan’s wedding in April 2026 was a gorgeous sunny bright day with all the love, family and genuine positive vibes.

From a relaxed morning at home to a traditional church ceremony, followed by a castle backdrop, a lively hotel reception, and finishing the night with tacos and sunshine… it was a day that really reflected who they are and thier loves. I really liked that The Mexican was a resteraunt that they go to and love already so it already felt special.

This was exactly the kind of wedding I love to photograph, natural and with lots of opportunities to capture candid moments.

A Morning Full of Energy (and Emotion)

I always arrive around an hour early, partly to avoid any travel stress, but mostly so I can ease into the day and start capturing those quieter, in-between moments.

Christina was getting ready at her Cousin’s house when I arrived, surrounded by her family. The atmosphere was light, excited, and full of laughter, which gave me a great opportunity to capture all the natural, candid interactions.

Once hair and makeup were finished with Abbie Owen MUA, we headed upstairs for her to get into her dress.

Her Mum helped her into it, a simple but emotional moment that always feels significant.

Her Mum wore gloves so she didn't get her buttons dirty but then Christina touched her face then dress and managed to get makeup on it! Thankfully her Cousin and I had quick solutions, stain wipes, chalk and a stain pen so the crisis was averted.

She also put on a ring in memory of her nan which was a gorgeous gold band and another lovely thing of many to photograph.

Christina’s dress by Sincerity Bridal had a beautiful, slightly vintage feel, a full-length gown with a train, a beaded scoop neckline, and a long lace-trimmed veil that brought everything together perfectly. Paired with white shoes finished with bows, the whole look felt timeless but still very much her.

Bride in white gown joyfully poses with colorful bouquet. Attendants hold her dress. Blue sky and guests in the background.

Her bouquet added a bold contrast, bright pinks, oranges, and greens, with ranunculus bringing texture and colour that really popped in photos. Flowers were made by The Sage Garden.

A Surprise Ride to the Ceremony

Before leaving, Christina’s family had another surprise waiting. It was so sweet watching how excited her eldest nephew was to see Christina's face when she saw what it was!

A classic white London cab pulled up outside to take her to meet her dad before heading to the church. Her reaction was characteristically lovely, Christina is such a happy and positive person who is clearly loved and loving. Her reaction was pure joy and appriciation.

A Traditional Church Ceremony

Their ceremony took place in a Catholic church, Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus and St Joseph. It was light and airy and they decorated with gorgeous flowers at the top of the aisle. The vicar is a happy, warm man who has a good sense of humour.

If you’re planning a church wedding, this is something I always reassure couples about, my approach is completely unobtrusive. I don’t climb over pews or get in the way, and I move quietly and intentionally, keeping movement to a minimum so the ceremony can unfold naturally.

I’m always happy to work within any guidelines the church sets, making sure everything feels seamless and respectful while still capturing all the important moments.

Christina arrived with her Dad, and we grabbed a few quick, natural portraits outside before heading in.

Inside, the ceremony was warm, personal, and full of character, beautiful readings from guests, and even a touch of humour from the priest that had everyone smiling.

They exchanged rings, shared their first kiss, and walked back down the aisle into a sea of colour, guests dressed in bright, joyful tones.

Since confetti wasn’t allowed, they’d organised bubble cannons instead which made for some fun photos as well as a little extra bonus of being fun for all her neices and nephews.

Sun, Backlight & Real Moments

It was an incredibly sunny day, so all the group photos were taken backlit facing the church instead of with the church in the background, keeping everyone comfortable and avoiding that harsh, squinty look. This is always a difficult choice but I believe that family formals need to be flattering for the people themselves before showing the setting.

Afterwards, we headed to Hertford Castle for couple portraits. I was thrilled as there were so many incredible spots to take photos- even in the harsh summer sun! I took a few with direct flash to counter any green colour cast from surrounding grass or harsh summer shadows.

My approach for couples photos is always the same: gentle direction where needed, but mostly letting couples just be together. The result is a mix of natural movement, connection, and those little in-between moments that feel real. Every couple is different and learning to read how much direction they need has become an important part of my job.

Bride in white gown holding flowers, groom in beige suit, walking hand in hand on a sunny day. Brick building and traffic light behind them.

We then walked over to Salisbury Arms Hotel, capturing some of the couple’s favourite images along the way, relaxed, candid shots full of movement and personality.

A Lively Reception (and Some Brilliant Moments)

Their entrance into the hotel was full of energy, waving napkins and cheers, welcomed by friends and family ready to celebrate.

They cut a beautiful two-tier heart-shaped cake, finished with soft white ruffles and a “just married” topper, simple, elegant and beautiful. Also- I tried it and it was so yummy! The cake was made by The Mad Batter

Speeches followed, given by the couple themselves, Christina’s Dad, and Nathan’s best man.

There were some standout moments of the speeches:

Christina thanking a Spanish relative in Spanish (a really lovely touch that made me cry!)

One of the kids raising their actual glasses (from their face!) during a toast, which had everyone laughing

Those unscripted moments are exactly why I focus so much on candid storytelling, they’re the ones people remember.

Tacos, Sunshine & The Perfect Ending

The celebrations didn’t stop there. The day finished at The Mexican, where even more friends joined them for drinks, tacos, and a laid-back evening in the sunshine.

It was the perfect contrast to the more traditional parts of the day, relaxed, social, and full of life.

And here's Christina's Google Review:

Cat was absolutely brilliant! Such a warm, kind person and a fantastic photographer! She made us feel totally at ease, and we now have truly magical wedding photos thanks to her. She even had emergency supplies when I got stains on my dress - one example of many of how she went above and beyond throughout the day. We loved working with Cat and would definitely recommend her. The photos are such beautiful quality!

hi! I'm cat and i am a full time wedding photographer
(and a little bit of a photography geek!)

I started taking photos as a teenager, my Dad was a wedding photographer and I would often help him. In 2021 I left my corporate job with a dream and hope that I could make photography a full time job. Since then I have been pouring my heart and soul into this business and have been honoured to be chosen as wedding photographer for so many lovely couples as well as being a portrait and event photographer.
I TAKE CLASSIC, TIMELESS, DOCUMENTARY STYLE PHOTOGRAPHS WITH MINIMAL INTRUSION

But I will step in and offer gentle guidance when it's right to do so, I have learned over the years to read the room, anticipate the next move, hold space when needed and offer support when I can.

aRE YOU LOOKING FOR A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
When choosing a wedding photographer, consider their style, experience, portfolio, and reviews from previous clients. It's also important to discuss pricing, availability, and any specific requests you may have.

Don't forget to meet with them in person to ensure you have good chemistry and feel comfortable with their approach.

Once you have narrowed down your list of potential wedding photographers, it's a good idea to ask them some key questions to help you make your final decision.

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • What is your photography style? Do you prefer a more traditional approach or a more candid, documentary style?

  • Do you have experience with weddings of a similar size and style to mine?

  • Can I see a full gallery of a recent wedding you photographed? This will give you a better sense of their consistency and quality of work.

  • Do you have backup equipment in case something goes wrong on the day of the wedding?

  • How do you handle difficult lighting situations (e.g. low light, harsh sunlight, indoor vs. outdoor)? This will help you gauge their technical expertise.

  • What is included in your packages? Are there any additional fees I should be aware of (e.g. travel, overtime)?

  • How long will it take to receive my photos after the wedding? Will they be edited and retouched?

  • Can you accommodate any special requests I have (e.g. specific shots, family portraits)?

  • How do you ensure that you capture all of the important moments on the day of the wedding?

By asking these questions and having an open and honest conversation with your wedding photographer, you can ensure that you find the right fit for your big day.
