An Editorial London Wedding: Asrin & Adam’s Modern Celebration at Abney Park & The Hackney

There is something SO magical about a London wedding. The effortless blend of historic architecture, urban grit, and pure romance creates a backdrop that you just can't replicate anywhere else. When Asrin and Adam first shared their vision with me, a day that blended editorial elegance with a relaxed, central London party vibe, I knew it was going to be an absolute dream to photograph.

High-Fashion Bridal Prep at The Town Hall Hotel

The day began at The Town Hall Hotel. Choosing a getting-ready location that aligns with your wedding aesthetic is an underrated tip for future couples. The hotel’s striking architecture provided a stunning canvas for Asrin’s bridal prep.

Asrin’s vision was heavily inspired by high-fashion, editorial photography. To lean into this look, I utilised a mix of direct flash and bounce flash. Direct flash is a fantastic technique for couples who want that crisp, modern, party-paparazzi feel to their images, while bounce flash softens the light for those classic, timeless portraits. We started inside her hotel room before moving out into the beautifully aesthetic foyer to capture some striking, editorial-style poses.

Meanwhile, Adam and his groomsmen were getting ready in a separate wing of the same hotel. This is a brilliant logistical tip for couples: booking rooms in the same venue ensures I can capture both of you getting ready without anyone accidentally bumping into each other before the ceremony! We kept Adam's portraits laid-back, capturing cool, candid moments of him and his groomsmen walking through the hotel's stylish corridors.

Planning Tip: Central London weddings move fast! Asrin had booked a classic black cab to take her to the ceremony, but as London traffic would have it, it was running late. Because we were in the heart of the city, we simply stepped outside and hailed a passing cab within minutes. The resulting photos inside the taxi with her mother and brother, again lit with crisp direct flash ended up being some of my favourites. Always leave a 15-minute buffer in your morning timeline for the unexpected!

A Romantic Ceremony at Abney Park.

The ceremony took place at the iconic Abney Park. For couples who love the grandeur of a church but want a completely bespoke, non-religious ceremony, Abney Park is a dream. It is a stunning, deconsecrated church where registrars come to conduct the ceremony, giving you total freedom over your vows and music.

From a photographer's perspective, the chapel is visually spectacular but comes with unique lighting challenges. It features a mix of natural light from the side windows, a vibrant stained-glass window, and a large chandelier casting warm light from above.

To ensure the photos felt atmospheric but perfectly crisp, I used a combination of ambient light and strategic flash. The result was a beautifully moody, romantic setting as Asrin and Adam exchanged deeply personal vows and listened to readings from two close friends.

Behind the Lens: To capture the ceremony perfectly, I discreetly placed a lapel microphone on Adam. Don't worry, if you look closely at the final gallery, you won't see a thing; I meticulously edit and Photoshop out any visible gear or microphones so your ceremony images remain entirely timeless and distraction-free.

Following a spectacular "dip" at the altar and a joyous walk back down the aisle, the newlyweds were greeted by their guests with an epic shower of confetti outside the weathered, historic doors.

Maximising Your Timeline: Group Photos & The "Photo Dash"

Getting group photos done efficiently is key to keeping the energy high on your wedding day. Before the wedding, I had scoped out a perfect set of nearby steps, which allowed us to comfortably fit a big group photo of everyone right after the ceremony.

After the traditional family formals, we did a "Photo Dash." I blasted You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates, and we raced through every single guest and their immediate family members. Taking just two or three quick, high-energy photos per group kept it incredibly fun, moving fast, and ensured that absolutely everyone was photographed without eating into the drinks reception.

Before leaving the chapel, we captured some stunning, highly editorial couple's portraits, utilising the veil, playing with sitting shots against the chapel backdrop, and taking some fun candid moments leaning against the iconic red double-decker bus they had hired to transport their guests!

Industrial Chic Reception at The Hackney

While the guests enjoyed champagne and a custom playlist on the bus ride across London, we arrived at The Hackney.

This venue is an absolute paradise for couples who love industrial chic design. It features gorgeous black-framed windows, exposed natural brick, and clean white-painted brickwork. The layout includes a stylish long bar, a smaller moody indoor area, and a lovely outdoor courtyard perfect for mingling.

For the reception, the space was styled with long communal tables, a top table set against the brick wall, and a custom "A&A" neon sign glowing above the newlyweds.

We used the unique layout of the venue for a second, more playful couple's session. Asrin actually walked along the tops of the reception chairs while Adam held her hand, creating a brilliant, high-fashion editorial look that brought a touch of modern art to their gallery!

A Tequila Tower, Cherry Cake Cutting & The Party

The details of Asrin and Adam’s evening reception were incredibly chic and perfectly reflected their fun-loving personalities. Asrin playfully fed Adam a cherry for the camera when cutting thier cake.

For the evening party, the space transformed. The venue's colorful ditch lighting kicked in, creating a dark, atmospheric room. To photograph this effectively without losing the venue’s cool vibe, I used a strategic mix of direct and bounce flash. This allowed me to keep the colorful, moody ambiance of the room intact while lighting the couple in an incredibly flattering, crisp way.

Their first dance included a spectacular lift, which led straight into a modern alternative to a champagne tower a Tequila Tower, complete with salt and fresh lemon and lime slices! They invited all their guests back onto the dancefloor to down a shot together, setting the absolute perfect tone for a night of non-stop dancing courtesy of their live DJ.
