When you’re a wedding photographer, some locations just feel particularly special to capture – and Islington Town Hall is one of them.

What an absolutely gorgeous venue to kick off the Spring wedding season! I had the delight of experiencing my first ceremony at this incredible venue when I was capturing Tiff and Lou’s big day

earlier this month.

A History of Islington Town Hall

Now an iconic landmark in the area, Islington Town Hall was built in the 1920s and officially opened in 1930. Steeped in style and history, this has become a top choice for London weddings.

If you’re an Arsenal fan, you’ll already know that since they won their first FA cup in 1930, victory celebrations have continued to be held there with many a trophy parade. If royalty’s more your thing - in 1953, Queen Elizabeth graced the steps of the Town Hall as part of her coronation visit.

It’s now such a popular venue for weddings, they regularly hold tours for groups of couples who are thinking about tying the knot there. You can keep yourself in the loop by checking their Eventbrite page here.

Weddings at Islington Town Hall

Set on London’s bustling Upper Street, it’s a perfect location for couples looking for character, style, and some North London buzz.

With its neoclassical exterior, inside you’ll find some art deco features of its era, including a sweeping marble staircase - who doesn’t love a staircase shot? There’s a fabulous choice of ceremony rooms – all of which allow you to bring your four-legged friend too!

The Council Chamber boasts an impressive vaulted ceiling, stained-glass windows and ornate wood panelling. This is one of the larger rooms available, with a capacity of 85 guests at weekends and 50 guests Tuesday – Friday.

The Mayor’s Parlour is for small, intimate weddings with a capacity of just 4 guests. Although a much smaller room, the style is similar to The Council Chamber, with stained-glass windows and oak panelling. A lovely feature of this room is the ornate carved fireplace.

The Richmond Suite mirrors the 1920s style of the building with its art deco features. Here, we have more ornate panelling and another gorgeous fireplace, which is usually decorated with dried flowers for the ceremony. The capacity for this room is up to 50 guests.

Room 99 has capacity for 20 guests and offers gorgeous natural light, high ceilings, Italian chandeliers and a parquet floor. Reported to be the most popular ceremony room, it’s perfect if you’re looking for simplistic elegance with a mid-century feel.

The Canonbury Suite is another intimate room available that has capacity for 2 witnesses. It features velvet furniture and the original stained-glass windows which have been restored. The room has a unique sense of style with gold, teal and powder pink décor.

The Angel Suite is named the ‘sister room’ to the Canonbury Suite with its matching décor, including furnishings and wood panelling. This is another small room with a capacity for 2 witnesses.

Tiff and Lou’s Vintage Wedding

I have to say, I was a bit worried when the day started with thunderstorms. Thankfully, the skies were blue when it was time for this lovely couple to tie the knot.

After meeting Tiff and Lou, it’s no wonder they chose Islington Town Hall as their wedding venue – it matches their style so perfectly. What a privilege to shoot this amazing couple who are just made to be photographed.

Room 99 offered the most fitting backdrop for the ceremony, and we got some fabulous shots throughout the venue. Not only that, they had the most fabulous classic Rolls-Royce as their wedding car which just finished everything off perfectly – simply stunning.

Comments

hi! I'm cat and i am a full time wedding photographer
(and a little bit of a photography geek!)

I started taking photos as a teenager, my Dad was a wedding photographer and I would often help him. In 2021 I left my corporate job with a dream and hope that I could make photography a full time job. Since then I have been pouring my heart and soul into this business and have been honoured to be chosen as wedding photographer for so many lovely couples as well as being a portrait and event photographer.
I TAKE CLASSIC, TIMELESS, DOCUMENTARY STYLE PHOTOGRAPHS WITH MINIMAL INTRUSION

But I will step in and offer gentle guidance when it's right to do so, I have learned over the years to read the room, anticipate the next move, hold space when needed and offer support when I can.

aRE YOU LOOKING FOR A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
When choosing a wedding photographer, consider their style, experience, portfolio, and reviews from previous clients. It's also important to discuss pricing, availability, and any specific requests you may have.

Don't forget to meet with them in person to ensure you have good chemistry and feel comfortable with their approach.

Once you have narrowed down your list of potential wedding photographers, it's a good idea to ask them some key questions to help you make your final decision.

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • What is your photography style? Do you prefer a more traditional approach or a more candid, documentary style?

  • Do you have experience with weddings of a similar size and style to mine?

  • Can I see a full gallery of a recent wedding you photographed? This will give you a better sense of their consistency and quality of work.

  • Do you have backup equipment in case something goes wrong on the day of the wedding?

  • How do you handle difficult lighting situations (e.g. low light, harsh sunlight, indoor vs. outdoor)? This will help you gauge their technical expertise.

  • What is included in your packages? Are there any additional fees I should be aware of (e.g. travel, overtime)?

  • How long will it take to receive my photos after the wedding? Will they be edited and retouched?

  • Can you accommodate any special requests I have (e.g. specific shots, family portraits)?

  • How do you ensure that you capture all of the important moments on the day of the wedding?

By asking these questions and having an open and honest conversation with your wedding photographer, you can ensure that you find the right fit for your big day.
