Shannon & Nick’s Engagement Shoot at Northbrook Park: A Magical Experience

Updated: Jun 6

This was such a lovely and relaxed session. We were fortunate to use their wedding venue, which gave us a great chance to explore together. We talked logistics and took a few photos among the wisteria that will disappear by August.

We had never met in person before this. Shannon and Nick booked me back in 2014. This was our first proper chance to say hello before their wedding. They are both hobby photographers, mostly focusing on wildlife, so they know their way around a camera. However, like many couples I work with, they are not entirely comfortable in front of one. They are a little camera-shy and nervous about having their photos taken. Fortunately, they naturally connect, laugh, and smile at each other, making my job a bit easier!

Overcast Light & Introductions

We met at Northbrook Park on an overcast afternoon. It was actually raining when we arrived, which wasn’t ideal, but the weather cleared up quickly. The venue was quiet; I believe we were the only ones there for most of our time, allowing us to explore without feeling rushed or observed.

We started by wandering the grounds. We strolled past the gardens and around the back of the main building, where sweeping panoramic views awaited us. While we didn’t take photos indoors (saving that magic for the wedding day), we peeked around the indoor spaces and discussed ideas. We talked about where they might set up the quartet, what kind of images they were drawn to, and what to expect on their wedding day.

Breaking the Ice with Fun Prompts & Games

I used various prompts and games to break the ice. I offered soft-spoken suggestions like push-pull, hand-on-cheek, and giggle-inducing walk-and-bump. I always provide options like dips or lifts for couples who want them. I teach how to do those safely, but I never force anyone to do anything they find awkward.

That first time in front of the camera can feel intimidating. However, Shannon and Nick eased into it quickly. I always strive for a balance—guiding just enough without breaking the magic of the moment. Fortunately, these two made it easier with their natural chemistry.

My Favorite Frame

My favorite shot from the session happened right in front of the venue. This is where they’ll tie the knot in a few months, and it holds significant meaning. I love these natural smiles and the authentic poses. The light hits just right!

Aren't they the cutest!

“If the Photos on the Day Are Like These…”

When I delivered their gallery, Shannon messaged to say: “We were quite nervous to open these, but absolutely love them. You made us feel so comfortable, and if the photos on the day are anything like these, then we'll be cherishing them for a long time.”

I feel giddy with good feedback. Honestly, it’s a big part of why I do this job—I'm a people pleaser! These short sessions aren’t just warm-ups; they help shake off any nerves about your photos. This way, you can relax and trust that I see you and have your back.

Looking Ahead to the Wedding

Shannon and Nick are getting married at Northbrook Park later this year. After this engagement shoot, I’m even more excited about it! We had the chance to explore, discuss logistics, and understand where everything might occur. I know how they like to be photographed—and how they don’t. That’s a huge advantage heading into their wedding day.

I hope this experience means they can approach their celebration with one less thing to worry about. We’ve already done this once, so the next time we meet, there will be florals, friends, music, and all the magic they’ve envisioned.

hi! I'm cat and i am a full time wedding photographer
(and a little bit of a photography geek!)

I started taking photos as a teenager, my Dad was a wedding photographer and I would often help him. In 2021 I left my corporate job with a dream and hope that I could make photography a full time job. Since then I have been pouring my heart and soul into this business and have been honoured to be chosen as wedding photographer for so many lovely couples as well as being a portrait and event photographer.
I TAKE CLASSIC, TIMELESS, DOCUMENTARY STYLE PHOTOGRAPHS WITH MINIMAL INTRUSION

But I will step in and offer gentle guidance when it's right to do so, I have learned over the years to read the room, anticipate the next move, hold space when needed and offer support when I can.

aRE YOU LOOKING FOR A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
When choosing a wedding photographer, consider their style, experience, portfolio, and reviews from previous clients. It's also important to discuss pricing, availability, and any specific requests you may have.

Don't forget to meet with them in person to ensure you have good chemistry and feel comfortable with their approach.

Once you have narrowed down your list of potential wedding photographers, it's a good idea to ask them some key questions to help you make your final decision.

Here are a few questions to consider:

  • What is your photography style? Do you prefer a more traditional approach or a more candid, documentary style?

  • Do you have experience with weddings of a similar size and style to mine?

  • Can I see a full gallery of a recent wedding you photographed? This will give you a better sense of their consistency and quality of work.

  • Do you have backup equipment in case something goes wrong on the day of the wedding?

  • How do you handle difficult lighting situations (e.g. low light, harsh sunlight, indoor vs. outdoor)? This will help you gauge their technical expertise.

  • What is included in your packages? Are there any additional fees I should be aware of (e.g. travel, overtime)?

  • How long will it take to receive my photos after the wedding? Will they be edited and retouched?

  • Can you accommodate any special requests I have (e.g. specific shots, family portraits)?

  • How do you ensure that you capture all of the important moments on the day of the wedding?

By asking these questions and having an open and honest conversation with your wedding photographer, you can ensure that you find the right fit for your big day.
