Northbrook Park — Shannon’s & Nick's Engagement Shoot

Updated: 2 days ago

This was such a lovely, relaxed session, we were lucky to be able to use their wedding venue, which also gave us a great opportunity to look round together, talk logistics and take a few photos in the wisteria that will be gone by August.

We’d never actually met in person before this. Shannon & Nick booked me a while ago — back in 2014, I think — and this was our first proper chance to say hello in person before their wedding. They’re both hobby photographers themselves (wildlife, mostly), so they know their way around a camera. But like so many of my couples, that doesn’t mean they love being in front of one. They’re both a bit camera-shy and a bit nervous about the prospect of having their photos taken. But they are the kind of couple who naturally connect, laugh and smile when they look at each other and lean in without prompts so my job was made a little easier!

Overcast Light & Introductions

We met at Northbrook Park on an overcast afternoon — actually, it was raining when we arrived, which wasn't great, but it cleared pretty quickly. The venue was quiet too — I think we were the only ones there for most of the time, which gave us space to explore without feeling rushed or watched.

We wandered the grounds first, past the gardens and around the back of the main building, where there are sweeping panoramic views. While we didn’t take photos inside (saving that magic for the wedding day), it did give us a chance to peek around the indoor spaces and chat about ideas — where they might have the quartet set up, what kind of images they’re drawn to and what to expect when the day arrives.

Prompts, Games & Gentle Guidance at Engagement Shoots

I used a few of my usual prompts and games to help break the ice — soft spoken suggestions like push-pull, hand-on-cheek, and the occasional giggle-inducing walk-and-bump. I always offer things like dips or lifts for couples who want them (and teach how to do them safely) but I never force anyone to do anything that makes them feel too awkward.

There’s something about that first time in front of the camera that can feel intimidating, but they eased into it quickly. I’m always looking for the balance — how to guide just enough without breaking the spell of the moment but these two made it easier with tons of natural chemistry.

My Favourite Frame

My favourite shot from the session is the one right in front of the venue — this is where they'll tie the knot in a few months, and so it holds loads of meaning, but also love these natural smiles, authentic posing and the light hits just right <3

Aren't they the cutest!

“If the Photos on the Day Are Like These…”

When I delivered their gallery, Shannon messaged to say:“We were quite nervous to open these, but absolutely love them. You made us feel so comfortable, and if the photos on the day are anything like these then we'll be cherishing them for a long time.”

I get so giddy with good feedback, honestly, it's a big part of why I do this job- I'm a people pleaser! These short sessions aren’t just a warm-up, though they are a chance to shake off any nerves about your photos so you can relax and trust that I see you and I've got you covered.

Looking Ahead to the Wedding

Shannon and her partner are getting married at Northbrook Park later this year, and after this shoot, I’m even more excited for it. We’ve already had time to explore, chat through the logistics, and get a feel for where everything might happen. I know how they like to be photographed (and how they don’t). That’s a huge gift going into a wedding day.

And for them, I hope it means they can walk into their celebration with one less thing to feel anxious about. We’ve already done this together once. The next time, we’ll have florals, friends, music, and all the magic they’ve been planning.

Planning Your Wedding at Northbrook Park?

If you’re thinking about an engagement shoot — whether you’re booking Northbrook Park or just want to feel more at ease before the big day — I’d love to help. I offer pre-wedding sessions as a standalone add-on (and right now, couples booking a full-day wedding package get 50% off).

Join me every month while I dive into sessions, show examples of my work in more detail and give advice to other aspiring boudoir photographers on my blog.  What can you hope to achieve reading this blog?

An inside look into creative sessions

Each month I try to experiment with at least one session, these are discounted sessions for clients who are happy to share images and if you'd like to be considered for a creative session please do subscribe for updates. These creative sessions usually create amazingly different photographs unlike most boudoir photographers in the UK and I am always striving for a uniqueness that aligns with my clients personality and individuality.

More in-depth full sessions

I also show more in-depth shoots from parties, cake smashes and engagements among other on location and studio portrait sessions for those wishing to see a more in depth look at how their shoots may look and what I can achieve.

Studio Boundaries

The blog is also where you may wish to read my studio boundaries for Boudoir sessions, these boundaries differ from studio to studio and I want to be upfront about these before you enquire incase you are looking to create images with a partner or video footage etc.

Some tips and tricks I've picked up

I love everything about photography, I definitely identify as a bit of a photography nerd! As I buy new kit and experiment I hope to pass on some of the lessons I learn to other photography nerds!
