Phoebe and Jack chose The Mill at Elstead for their summer wedding, a charming countryside pub with its own dedicated ceremony space and private garden. It was the perfect setting for a relaxed celebration, with everything taking place in one beautiful location.
A Morning Surrounded by Family
Phoebe spent the morning getting ready at home with her mum, her best friend and two of her sisters. Rather than trying to look like someone else for her wedding day, she made the decision to do her own makeup because she wanted to feel completely like herself. Her hair was styled by one of her bridesmaids, who also happens to be a hairstylist, creating a look that felt effortlessly elegant.
One of my favourite details was that Phoebe wore her glasses all day. She told me she wears them every day and simply couldn't imagine getting married without them. I absolutely loved that decision, it felt so authentically her, and it's always wonderful to see couples embracing the things that make them who they are rather than feeling pressured to fit a traditional bridal image.
Her dress was equally distinctive, featuring a sheer bodice with delicate leaf appliqué, a sweetheart neckline and a glittering tulle skirt that caught the sunshine beautifully. She carried a bouquet of fresh white, cream and soft yellow flowers, while her bridesmaids wore elegant blush pink dresses that complemented the colour palette perfectly.
Before leaving, Phoebe shared an emotional first look with her dad before the pair climbed into one of the longest vintage wedding cars I've ever photographed. With its soft top folded down in the sunshine, we were able to capture some wonderfully fun photographs as they made their way to the venue.
A Ceremony Full of Their Story
Instead of a registrar-led ceremony, Phoebe and Jack chose to have a celebrant ceremony, making the entire experience feel incredibly personal.
Rather than simply completing the legal formalities, their ceremony told the story of their relationship, how they met, what they've built together and the people who have shaped their lives. There were plenty of laughs alongside some genuinely heartfelt moments, creating an atmosphere that felt warm, relaxed and completely centred around them.
Afterwards everyone gathered outside for confetti before we flew through the family photographs. One thing I always aim to do is keep formal photos efficient, giving couples as much time as possible to enjoy their guests, so after a handful of traditional family portraits and some more relaxed bridal party photographs, everyone was free to grab a drink and soak up the sunshine.
A Surprise Nobody Saw Coming
One of the biggest surprises of the day came courtesy of Phoebe's mum, who had secretly organised a singing waiter.
It's something I haven't seen at a wedding before, and it completely transformed the atmosphere. Guests went from quietly enjoying their meal to singing, laughing and joining in together. Those unexpected moments often create some of the most genuine photographs because nobody is worrying about the camera, they're simply enjoying themselves.
Emotional Speeches and Modern Editorial Portraits
The speeches delivered everything you'd hope for: laughter, tears and plenty of stories that had everyone either wiping away tears or doubled over laughing.
Because the top table was positioned in front of a bright backlit window inside the barn-style reception space, I used direct flash throughout much of the speeches. Rather than fighting the light, it created a bold, modern editorial look that suited the energy of the day perfectly while allowing every emotion to shine through.
Golden Hour and A Very Lively Evening
As the evening rolled around, we snuck away for some golden hour portraits while the light was at its softest. Those quiet moments together always offer a lovely contrast to the excitement of the rest of the day, giving couples a chance to pause and actually take everything in.
Back at the venue, things quickly became much less serene.
Jack was hoisted into the air by his groomsmen before Phoebe insisted on having her turn too, creating some brilliantly fun photographs that perfectly summed up the atmosphere of the day.
After the cake cutting, decorated with tiny bees in honour of Phoebe's nickname, "Bee" the celebrations moved upstairs for an energetic evening party.
The DJ kept the dance floor packed with modern dance music, drum and bass remixes and fresh takes on classic songs, creating the kind of party that nobody wanted to leave (and a killer dancefloor to photograph!)
Weddings That Feel Like You
One of the things I loved most about Phoebe and Jack's wedding was how personal it was.
From Phoebe choosing to wear her glasses and do her own makeup, to the celebrant ceremony, the surprise entertainment and the little bee details woven throughout the day, every decision reflected who they are rather than what tradition suggested they should do. I think this was even more prevalent at Phoebe and Jacks wedding because they hadn't atteneded a wedding before so they were really building a vision of what they're own wedding should be and not just a carbon copy of what they had seen before.
Those are always my favourite weddings to photograph, days where couples feel comfortable enough to be completely themselves, because that's where the most meaningful moments naturally happen.
